The Nadadores are the Huntsville USA competitive swim club that compete year-round. Reece Esser, an 8th grade student, explains the hardships of being a part of the team.
“It is $75 per month, plus a yearly USA registration fee, and you must have your own suit and goggles,” mother Stacey Ulery explains.
Because it requires a significant amount of the swimmers’ time and dedication, only 20-30 swimmers have made the team.
“We have practiced every day except for Sunday,” Reece Esser said. “It helps prepare us for our meets that land on a weekend each month.”
Since USA swim teams are broken up by region; the Nadadores swim against other swimmers in the Gulf Region.
“People don’t realize how hard swim is; it’s actually pretty difficult. In one practice session we do dry lands, which consist of crunches, bicycles, scissor kicks, lunges, push-ups, squats, and more. We swim with our clothes and shoes on, sometimes. We do a 200-yard warm-up followed by more sets of 150-yard swims and 200-yard swims. These sets usually consist of the four swim strokes, which are butterfly, breast, back, and free,” Reece explained.
Her time on the team may have only just begun, but with the work out these athletes go through every day, we can be sure to keep an eye out for Reece Esser to come to HHS in the future.
“It’s twice as hard as summer league swim, it makes us faster and better at the strokes we do,” Esser said.
In summer league their practices are not as rigorous or extensive; they go slower and work more on technique, whereas on the Nadadores they push the swimmers to the limits to make them faster and stronger.
“I am learning important qualities like team work, discipline, and dedication,” Reece Esser said.
